Presentation Notes
Assessing first year students well to promote retention

The important topic of first year retention has come in to focus with the recent publication of a HEA report entitled ‘A Study of Progression in Irish Higher Education’. The AIT Learning and Teaching Unit in conjunction with the National Digital Learning Repository (NDLR), SIF2 Flexible Learning and Student Led Learning Projects and the Learning Innovation Network (LIN) will host this workshop facilitated by Professor Sally Brown who is Emeritus Professor of Higher Education Diversity in Teaching and Learning at Leeds Metropolitan University

Learning Outcomes

In this workshop participants will have opportunities to:

  • Consider some of the reasons why students may have a tendency to drop out of third level.
  • Review some of the indicators that are associated with drop-out.
  • Discuss ways in which retention can either help or hinder student engagement.

Choose a range of assessment practices for implementation on their won courses in order to promote retention.
